FUN FACTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS YOU MAY NOT KNOW

Christmas is one of those holidays that feels full of traditions we’ve always known. Things like decorating the tree, baking cookies, watching the same movies every year, and gathering with family. But behind all the cozy traditions are some surprisingly fun and interesting facts that many people have never heard before. Some of them go back hundreds of years.

While others are newer traditions that somehow became part of Christmas magic along the way. Here are a few fun Christmas facts that might surprise you. And might even give you something fun to share around the dinner table this year:

CHRISTMAS DATE

Early Christians didn’t originally celebrate Jesus’ birth on this date. The church later chose December 25 in the 4th century, possibly to align with existing winter festivals that people were already celebrating.

HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS TREES

Decorating evergreen trees became popular in Germany in the 1500s, and the tradition eventually spread across Europe and later to North America. Today, it’s hard to imagine Christmas without a tree glowing in the living room.

CANDY CANES

The familiar hook shape didn’t appear until much later. The candy eventually became a curved-shaped treat. This then became a representation of a shepherd’s staff.

In 1857, they wrote this famous song. But for Thanksgiving originally. Over time it became so associated with winter and sleigh rides that it eventually became a Christmas classic.

SANTA CLAUS

The modern idea of Santa comes from Saint Nicholas, a generous bishop from the 4th century who was known for secretly giving gifts to people in need. So, Santa Claus was actually inspired by a real person.

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

According to legend, Saint Nicholas once dropped gold coins down a chimney, and they landed in stockings that had been hung by the fire to dry. That story is believed to be the inspiration behind hanging stockings for Christmas.

POINSETTIAS

Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, introduced the bright red plant to the United States in the 1800s after discovering it growing in Mexico.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

The first commercial Christmas card was created in England in 1843, and the idea quickly spread as a way to send holiday greetings to friends and family.

RUDOLPH THE RED NOSE REINDEER

The beloved character was invented in 1939 as part of a holiday promotion for Montgomery Ward. What started as a marketing idea quickly became one of the most famous Christmas stories ever.
