When it tilts away from the sun, the days become shorter and cooler, bringing us fall and eventually winter. It’s kind of amazing to think that something as simple as the angle of our planet can change everything from the weather outside to the foods we crave and the holidays we celebrate.

LEAVES COLOR CHANGE
As the days get shorter, trees stop producing chlorophyll, which is the pigment that makes leaves green. When that fades, beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows start to appear.

Before the word autumn became common, people simply referred to the season as harvest because it was the time when crops were gathered before winter.
AUTUMN EQUINOX
It usually happens around September 22 or 23, the day when daylight and nighttime are almost exactly equal. After that, the nights slowly start getting longer.
