KINDS OF SURFBOARDS

If you did not know this yet, there are lots of different types of surf boards. You will be surprised how many kinds there are! Check out this big list of interesting surfboards:

  1. Short Board

This is the preferred gear of elite surfers. These types of boards are primarily used for competitions and are made for high-performance riding. Short boards typically measure 5’6 to 6’4 in length, 16 to 20 in width, and have a more pointy, shorter tip. They are less stable and more challenging to paddle compared to other boards, making them tougher for beginners to use.

Short boards are the best candidate for competition surfing since they more than make up for their shortcomings in these areas with mobility and speed. Its three-fin design gave rise to another term for them — thrusters.

  1. Long Board

Longboards, which are recognized as a classic, are typically 8 to 10 feet long with a rounded nose. They provide remarkable stability and are best for small waves, making them a great option for novices. Long boards are quite bouncy because of their large volume.

  1. Mid Length

Middle length boards are the kinds of boards that well fall between short boards and long boards. These are shorter than long boards, measuring 7’6″ to 8’6″, but still provide a high amount of buoyancy and stability for novices. This will be a great first board if ever.

  1. Fish

This board has a basic and traditional twin fin design. It is called “Fish” due to the appearance of its fin being like a fish tail. A fish board also has a more rounded nose, tail, and mid section. Fish boards are good for a vast range of wave scenarios because of their shorter and thicker form, but they are most often ridden in small to medium-sized waves.

  1. Soft Top

The term for this board, “soft top”, comes from the stuff used to make the deck which are soft materials. They are very floatable, which makes them perfect for rookies. The soft material considerably lowers harm done by surf boards, making it a safer option as well. Soft top boards are also known as soft boards or foamie.

  1. Fun Board

The fun board are kind of similar to mid length boards. It stands halfway between a long board and a short board, making them suitable for both new and experienced surfers. Fun boards, which are normally 6 to 8 feet in length and have a variety of fin variations, can be used in waves that are ankle to head height.

  1. Mini Simmons

Bob Simmons, a mathematician at Douglas Aircraft, was the creator of this cool surf board – the Mini Simmons, which has roots dating back to the 1950s. These surfboards are short and wide, which makes them excellent speed machines for cutting through the waves. Mini Simmons are designed for smaller, less powerful ripples.

  1. Groveller

These boards, which are 3 to 4 inches smaller than short boards, are best for lower, weaker waves. Grovellers have broader noses and tails and a smoother rocker. Surfers can benefit from the characteristics of a short board on waves that are weak or have poor surfing circumstances using this surfboard.

  1. Alaia

The absence of vertical fins on the Alaia distinguishes it from other surfboards and allowing it to be easier for the board to ride over the water. Turning is accomplished by pointing the board in the preferred manner while cutting through the waves with the sharp edges of the rail.

  1. Bonzer

Malcom and Duncan Campbell created these initially back in 1972. In contrast to popular opinion, the Bonzer was the first board model to include a three fin layout, not the short board. It had a big central fin and two smaller, sharply angled fins.

  1. Gun

These kinds of surf boards are made to handle the largest waves. Long boarders may hit waves that smaller boards cannot because to their buoyancy and pace. Guns are 7′ to 10′ in length with four fins arranged in a “quad” pattern, similar to long boards.

  1. Stand up Paddleboard (SUP)

Although the classification of SUPs as surfboards is up for question, several pro athlete surfers have been using these “recreational” boards to ride enormous waves. In calmer waters, stand-up paddleboards are frequently used. It enables its users to glide across calm waters.

  1. Tow Board

They are intended to deliver over large, strong waves speed, control, and stability. Tow-in surfboards, which range in length from 5’5″ to 6’2, have a narrow shape and a broader tail and nose. Additionally, they are heavier — between 10 and 20 pounds, which aids in stability maintenance and improves performance over waves.

  1. Step up Surfboard

are lengthier, modified short boards that have been enhanced to tackle larger, more powerful waves. Better stabilization in large waves and speedier ascent to the peak of a wave thanks to improved stroking are the two main benefits of step-up boards.

  1. Foil Board

The hydrofoil that protrudes from beneath this board is what actually distinguishes foil surfboards from their regular equivalents. You could stay on top of the water’s surface using these hydrofoils.
