THANKSGIVING FACTS FOR KIDS

Thanksgiving is a special holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. It’s a time when families and friends come together to give thanks for what they have and share a big meal. Here are some fun Thanksgiving facts for kids:

The First Thanksgiving – The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims and Native Americans. It lasted three days and included a feast of wild turkey, deer, corn, and pumpkin.

Turkey Tradition – Over 46 million turkeys are eaten each year on Thanksgiving! Benjamin Franklin once suggested the turkey should be the national bird of the U.S., but the bald eagle was chosen instead.

The Macy’s Parade – The famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924. It features giant balloons, floats, and marching bands, and millions of people watch it every year.

Football Fun – Watching football on Thanksgiving has become a tradition, with the first game played on this day in 1876.

Pumpkin Pie – Pumpkin pie is a popular dessert on Thanksgiving, made from pumpkins that were originally grown by Native Americans.

Thanksgiving Becomes a Holiday – Thanksgiving wasn’t an official holiday until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared it a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise.”

The Wishbone Tradition – Many families participate in the tradition of breaking the turkey’s wishbone. The person who gets the larger piece gets to make a wish!

Turkey Pardon – Each year, the President of the United States “pardons” a live turkey, sparing it from being cooked for dinner. This fun tradition has been going on since the 1940s!

Black Friday – The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, which is one of the biggest shopping days of the year with lots of discounts and sales.

Native American Contributions – The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, beans, and squash, which became essential foods at the first Thanksgiving feast.
