WHAT IS A ROSARY?
The rosary, often known as prayer beads, is a religious practice in which prayers are repeated and counted on a string of beads or a knotted rope (from Latin rosarium, “rose garden”). The beads or string can also be referred to as a rosary. The practice is widespread, with examples found in almost every major religious tradition.
The Rosary is a Scripture-based meditation prayer. When we pray the Rosary, we ask Mary to pray for us as we contemplate Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection in order to become closer to Him. St. Dominic proclaimed the Gospel to battle different heresies in the early 13th century, and he formed the Order of the Dominicans to carry out this mission. However, the heresy persisted despite their attempts, so he prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for guidance.
According to history, Mary appeared to him in 1221 and gave him the Rosary devotion, encouraging him to spread the rosary to others. Many people believe that the Rosary’s historical origins can be traced back to the monastery practice of reciting 150 Psalms each week, which later evolved into the recitation of the Hail Mary.
WHAT ARE THE PRAYERS OF A ROSARY?
The Rosary is a collection of prayers based on the Bible. Although rosary beads are not required for reciting the devotion, many people pray with them to help them focus their prayers. Here is an ordered list of prayers of a rosary:
- Apostle’s Creed – first prayer on the crucifix
- Our Father – prayer for the first bead
- Hail Mary – prayer for each of the 3 beads
- Glory Be – next prayer after the 3 beads
- Repeat the process for the remaining beads – Our Father, 10 Hail Mary, Glory Be
